The 100: A Dystopian Post-Apocalyptic Fiction Series You Just Can't Miss

I've always been a fan of the dystopian post-apocalyptic fiction as it shows us how our minds work and how we would react when we're being pushed to the limits. It gives us a glimpse of what could be, how far we would go, and up to what extent can we actually allow ourselves to let go before we entirely lose ourselves. It's never entirely perfect- the portrayals and the characters, I mean- but it's always something to consider and contemplate about. This time, The 100 took it to a whole another level. This show is not just about the romance and the kids-gone-wild, while it may come off as that once you watch the first few episodes of the first season. I won't go into details, but here's a gist of the story.

THE 100 is a story about a hundred juvenile delinquents who have been sent back to Earth after the nuclear warfare left the planet uninhabitable 97 years ago. They have been sent back to test the waters- to put it lightly. But in Jaha's words who is like the leader of the clan, they are being sent to the ground because they are expendable. If they die, it won't matter as they are deemed deviants, outcasts and a disgrace to society. With that said, you can imagine the craziness and the antics these so-called deviants started getting in to in the first half of the season (sex, drugs, and more sex - need I say more?).
However, when they realized that they are not the only ones on Earth as opposed to what they had been told, the 100 started coming together and began putting their differences aside to survive. In a way, they became a family. These 100 so-called outcasts and rebels laughed, fought, killed, loved and held hands in order to get through whatever comes their way.  And that's only the beginning.

CLARKE GRIFFIN

Clarke Griffin, the heroine of the story, did not play the usual "I don't want to be the leader" line. She is tough. She's beautiful. She's daring and she's ready to kick some ass. And most of all, she listens.
Just like everybody else, Clarke has her demons and she's not afraid to talk about it. She's intense, calculating and compassionate.
I guess, in a way, the reason why you would love Clarke is because you know where she's coming from every step of the way. You can understand her and her growth from their first landing to co-leading the rest of The 100. She's human. And that's all you can ever really ask from a fictional character on TV, to portray humanity the best they could.

BELLAMY BLAKE

Bellamy Blake is your typical bad-boy in the story. Aside from his naturally charming self (I won't lie, I've been mesmerized myself), Bellamy proved to be more than meets the eye after he showing and baring his insecurities and misjudgments along the way. And despite his tough exterior, he is vocal about caring for his sister Octavia.
Having proclaimed himself as the leader of The 100, he had to be ruthless and unbreakable. However, as his story continues, we learn that Bellamy is just like everyone else. He gives in to peer pressure. He can be reckless and he has a tendency to be selfish. But just like everyone else, he fights for what he believes in and he's not afraid to take the hit if he has to.

OCTAVIA BLAKE

Octavia Blake started off as a spoiled-attention-seeking brat we have all come to love and hate in the history of films and TV shows. She is gorgeous and she knows it- just like the captain of the cheerleading squad in a high school teenage romcom. Luckily for us, this is not a romcom.
Octavia grew up through the course of the show and while we will still have glimpses of the old bratty Octavia, there's no denying that her free-spirited-ness and her willingness to take a risk saved the group more than they (we) are willing to admit. And honestly, she's now one of the characters I look forward to seeing grow.

While there are a number of characters to take note of, these three are my top favorites. So, you can say I'm biased. Finn Collins, Jasper and Monty are unforgettable characters as well. However, I just don't see as much depth in their characters as these three have. In my opinion, Clarke, Bellamy and Octavia have shown the most possible human characteristics and attributes throughout the first season of the show. Their growth from being trapped in a space prison to adapting to the extremities of the situation while struggling with their own pasts and demons was plausible. And for that, their characters made sense and was worth-mentioning.

Overall, you will realize along the way that the story itself digs deep into the human psyche. It makes us question ourselves, our society and/ or the lack thereof. It makes you see morality at a whole new level and it gives you the reasoning behind every motive, every action and every situation. It helps you see the consequences behind every decision and it shows you the possibilities behind every choice. It's not just about the romance or sex or voyeurism. It's also about friendship, betrayal, second chances and forgiveness. And it's been a while since we've seen a series that does just that. With all honesty, it might be a while before someone can top this one. Truly, THE 100 stayed true to its name. Hopefully, they keep it coming!
